On Her Way to School

car

Before she pulls off

He makes sure she’s safe and

Buckled in before they begin

Their conversation

The stimulation of his listening ear

The way he listens is

Not of this world and

Neither is she

The people in the other cars be

Lookin

They be looking at them half crazy

Crazy Like the crazy type that be talking to themselves

But she is never alone and

She knows it

And maybe they do too

As she drives and

As she stops talking she

Be listening and he

Be telling her everything she needs to know but

The silence is loud as ever

So loud that the people on the street

Are overcome by his words

The power of these words that

They haven’t even heard but

If they listened to him like her they

Too could have this stimulation and

This conversation

Some of the people called her a loon and

Some of the people called her a fool but

All she was doin was talking to God on her way to school

Pills

PILLS

Your heart beats strong

God let it be

You are blessed and you

You

You Are loved

But to you, love is

how much of life you can miss

sleeping it all away

Sleeping on your youth

And the dawn and

The day

I pray:

Lord, may your hands put the pills

Up in a place far far away

I hate the sound they make in her purse

I hate it in the worst

Way

It’s the worse way to waste

borrowed time you can not make stay

I can not just say STOP TAKING THEM

I know God I know I know

it doesn’t work that

Way

But God, just listen

I know it may sound

twisted when

I say I’m so conflicted with

My emotions

Do you know what I mean when I say I’m

Stuck somewhere in between

being optimistic and

being realistic

about her disease and

about her need

I need answers

Please.

How did she get this?

Addicted.

A Prayer for My Mother

me and mommy old

Born to lose and built to win
All odds stacked against her is how it begins
God bless my mother, the places she’s been

The little girl who hadn’t a selfish thought
She stood her ground, the fights she fought
God bless the child who was the adult

She gave birth to three and last was me
She always provided us with way more than we needed
God bless this woman for the roots she sowed and she seeded

Enough love to feed every hungry child on this earth,
Enough love to soothe the entire world when it pains and when it hurts
God bless the healer and her invaluable worth

She glows with independence, it’s clear and it’s known
She walks with style and class, but she’s never afraid to walk alone
God bless the lady who has always had her own

Odds stacked against her like no other
Yet no one stronger, yet no one tougher
I pray she knows how much I love her

God bless the queen I call my mother
